Underwater Footage – Live Bait Analysis
After reeling the fish in, you first want to get control of the line.
Be sure to do so at a safe distance keeping your hands and fingers out of harm’s way.
Ideally have gloves on, especially if you’re dealing with braided line.
I prefer to use a long pair of hook removers or dehookers.
I always have the Baker HXSS Stainless Steel X-Heavy Duty HooKout for toothy fish.
They are easy to use and allow you to grab hold of the hook without compromising your fingers.
Once you have hold of the line, grab the hook with the hook remover, then twist and push to remove the hook.

As shown in the video. The squeeze-out hook remover works fine for sharks caught with a J-Hook.
However, for a shark caught with a circle hook, I use the Booms Shark Dehooker and twist the hook out or cut the line as close as I dare to the hook.
A piercing looks better on a shark than me missing a digit.
Yep if it’s too risky to get the hook out it’s best to cut the line. Those hooks will rust out in no time!
