While simplifying ones arsenal does make one concentrate on using a lure more effectively i do like to experiment and buy new lures from time to time in fact you guys are funny you say to simplify but then every year you come out with new lures to use usually stating that they are a must have in ones tackle arsenal or you could be missing out? But thats ok like I always say everyone is different no angler fishes exactly like the other and what one lure does for one not always for the other and in my case and where I live and fish which is totally the opposite from where you live and fish this philosophy could not be more true but thats what I have experienced and seen because like always I only speak for myself what others think or do is on them enough said 🤔
Thanks for sharing the helpful insights Steven. The keep it simple approach is what we always recommend to newer anglers who are mostly in need of getting better at finding the best 90/10 zones to fish. The bigger lure arsenal is what we recommend for the more advanced anglers so they can catch the bigger/smarter fish more consistently.
Thanks for the video Luke. Why do you downsize to a 2/0 hook when going with the Hoss Round Eye jig head?
The 2/0 fits the lure better since it’s just big enough to get consistently good hooksets… I go up to 3/0 with weedless hooks so that there is adequate gap for consistently good hooksets… in both cases, it’s all about being as small as possible (to have better motion in the lure and to decrease snags) while being just big enough to ensure a good hookup percentage.
If I’m going out for 4, 5 hours how long will a pack of lures usually last? I’m thinking about taking 6 of each hook, maybe two of each lure and a bottle of water to beat the banks.
That depends on what type of area that you’re fishing. If fishing grass flats with high levels of puffer fish, then you’ll need more lures than hooks because pufferfish can easily bite through any soft plastic lure while there are very few breakoff risks on a grass flat.
But if fishing around oysters/rocks with mostly trout, redfish, flounder, or snook, then the lures will last a very long time because those fish suck the lure down (vs. puffers, pinfish, that bite tails).

I’d go with 15 lb for all purpose with lures (flounder, trout, snapper inclusion). But if primarily targeting redfish and/or snook, then 20 lb.
