Can AI Really Help You Catch More Fish? The Experiment Revealed

Every angler has those days where they second-guess everything. Am I in the right spot? Using the right lure? Fishing at the right time?

But what if a computer could answer those questions for you?

That’s exactly what Greyson Roberts set out to test.

For years, Smart Fishing Spots has helped Insider Members find the most productive fishing areas. But now, it’s doing something entirely new—telling anglers not just where to fish, but when, what to throw, and even how to fish it.

At first, Greyson wasn’t sure what to think. Could AI really figure out the best way to catch fish? Or was this just another gimmick?

So he put it to the test. No second-guessing. No overthinking. Just following the AI’s advice to the letter to see what happened.

Here’s how it went down.

Spot #1 – Low Expectations

Greyson started at a Smart Fishing Spot with a strike score of 5—not exactly a confidence booster. The system labeled it as “fair,” which didn’t inspire much hope. But he was committed to the experiment.

AI’s Plan:

With expectations low, he made a few casts… and then bam. Flounder in the kayak.

Maybe it was luck. Maybe the AI was onto something.

To really push it, Greyson paddled two miles to another spot that looked way more promising.

Spot #2 – A School Waiting to Happen

As soon as he arrived, Greyson saw mullet jumping and baitfish everywhere. It was the kind of spot that just screamed fish.

AI’s Plan:

At this point, he was really starting to trust the AI’s recommendations. He cast right where it suggested and immediately hooked into a school of speckled trout.

It was almost like the AI already knew what was going to happen.

But the real test was still ahead.

Spot #3 – The Moment of Truth

With a flounder from Spot #1 and trout from Spot #2, Greyson needed just one redfish to complete the panhandle inshore slam.

He paddled to Spot #3 and decided to test a different AI recommendation.

AI’s Plan:

At first, he wasn’t sure about switching lures—especially since the paddle tail had been working. But he trusted the AI and made the switch.

On his first cast, he hooked into another big speckled trout. Not the redfish he was after, but still impressive.

Then, ten minutes later, he felt another bite. This fish was different—digging in, not shaking like a trout.

As it got closer, he saw the telltale black spots. Redfish.

Inshore slam complete.

Was AI Just Lucky? Or Is It the Real Deal?

Greyson went into this experiment expecting a mixed bag. Some hits, some misses, maybe a fluke catch or two.

But after following the AI’s advice for an entire trip, the results spoke for themselves.

  • It picked the right lures.
  • It put him in the right spots.
  • It led him straight to a flounder, trout, and redfish—all in one trip.

So was it just luck? Or is there something to this whole idea of letting data-driven fishing take the guesswork out of things?

That’s still up for debate.

You probably just killed that undersized trout that you handled with your dry hand.

My one time test with finding fish with the AI feature failed. There were no fish in the area. You still need your eyes and ears. No bait or birds means no fish.
